When enabled, staff can quickly identify teammates they’re working with—and, if allowed, start a group chat directly from their shift.
Shift Crew is designed to improve visibility and communication, especially for teams working overlapping shifts.
When to Use Shift Crew
Shift Crew is most useful when:
Multiple staff members work overlapping shifts
Teams want clearer visibility into who they’re working with
You want to reduce confusion or last-minute question
Shift Crew does not replace Shift Coverage.
It complements it by making staffing more transparent.
How Shift Crew Works (High Level)
When Shift Crew is enabled:
Staff can see other users whose shifts overlap in time with theirs and instructors who are teaching at that time
Only shifts within the same time window appear
Visibility is based on scheduled shifts—not availability or coverage status
If chat is enabled:
Staff can create a group chat with their shift crew
Messaging behavior follows your workspace messaging settings
Enable or Disable Shift Crew (Managers)
Shift Crew is controlled by managers.
Go to Schedule
Open Team Schedule
Click the gear icon (Shift Settings)
Toggle Shift Crew on or off
This setting applies to the selected team.
Optional: Enable Shift Crew Group Chat
If messaging is enabled for your workspace, managers can also allow group chat.
When enabled:
Staff can start a group chat directly from their shift
The chat includes only users in the same shift crew
Messaging permissions and rules follow your existing workspace settings
If disabled:
Staff can still see their shift crew
Group chat is not available
What Staff See in My Schedule
From My Schedule, staff will:
See a Shift Crew section on their assigned shift
View teammates whose shifts/classes overlap with theirs
Access the quick menu for available actions
Only users with overlapping shift times appear.
How Shift Crew Determines Who Appears
A user appears in a shift crew if:
They are scheduled for a shift
Their shift/class overlaps with the start and/or end time of another user’s shift
The shift is on the same day
Shift Crew does not include:
Users without a scheduled shift
Users whose shifts do not overlap in time
Open or unassigned shifts
Class Instructors and Teaching Schedules
Shift Crew also shows:
Instructors teaching classes during the same time window
Alongside staff scheduled for shifts
Relationship to Shift Coverage
Shift Crew:
Improves visibility into who is working
Helps staff coordinate informally
Can reduce confusion around staffing
Shift Coverage:
Handles formal requests to give up or take a shift
Applies approval rules and policies
Automatically reassigns shifts
For managing changes to assignments, always use Shift Coverage.
